Portfolio > When The Long Trick's Over

Two sisters. One dream. The hardest open-water swim in the world.
This triumphant play from Olivier Award-winning Morgan Lloyd Malcolm moves forwards and backwards in time across the 21 miles between Dover and Calais as a young swimmer harnesses her mind and body to make the crossing.

With grief and joy, 90’s pop-songs and lists, oil tankers and jelly babies, love persists whatever the distance, and however perilous the journey to the other side.

Tackling what it means to grieve, both physically and mentally, how we deal with loss and how those we have lost paradoxically remain present in our lives as we struggle through our world without them.
Focusing on the untapped strength of our bodies and family connections, Morgan’s East of England debut production is very much a piece for our times and a step change for us as we produce our first full scale tour since the pandemic, and continue in our mission to produce quality new work across Suffolk and beyond.

Supported by wheeling oceanic projections designed by Gillian Tan, we are transported to the depths of the sea. Forever ebbing and flowing, its continuous movement is unending.

But what makes the show a standout is the combination of this intimate story with such stellar design. The team understand the sea (the title comes from John Masefield’s poem Sea-Fever) and render it beautifully. Ghent handles Vicki Amedume’s fluid aerial movement design with aplomb. Grace Smart’s stunning set combines with Gillian Tan’s evocative lighting and video, and Esther Kehinde Ajayi’s sound design to create a seascape that draws you in as much as the real thing, dangerous and seductive, full of secrets and power.

  • The Stage

its staging is massively impressive, actor Stacey Ghent suspended in mid-air, her movements controlled, the excellent lighting and video design by Gillian Tan
